About the Artist/Site

Bartolucci was a bricklayer and carpenter who began installing different kinds of art works on his large hilly property on the outskirts of a small mountain village. He owned this property in conjunction with members of his large family.

Bartolucci’s most astonishing creation was the Globe of Peace, a globe 31 meters (100 feet) in diameter, its 180 ton weight held up between axles and long ribs of wood cut and nailed together over its three-story height. He worked on this project secretly for five years, opening it in 1988; the globe rotates thanks to two electric motors. Other projects around the hilly property included a fountain-tower, a depiction of the moon, a tree made up of 150,000 buttons, and an amazing underground museum where Bartolucci installed his extensive collections of objects, including peasant tools, calculators, musical instruments, bottles, and more.

A first period of fame and glory after the opening was followed by legal troubles, however, that forced the closure of the park. Since his death, members of Bartolucci’s family maintain the extensive grounds, including the private road leading to the hill, which had been named after the artist. Officially the park is closed to the public, pending an agreement with the city council.
