About the Artist/Site

Leonard Knight created Salvation Mountain in the desert near Slab City to promote his message “God is Love.” He uses adobe, hay bales, and tree limbs to sculpt the site, and has painted it with over 100,000 gallons of house paint, much of it donated from friends and supporters. Initially decried as an environmental hazard and an unauthorized use of state land, in 2002 it was entered into the Congressional Record as a National Treasure, and its current status is, at least temporarily, safe.
