About the Artist/Site

A group of buildings considered to be among the finest works of the Pueblo-deco period. Created by both “Pop” and Lena Imboden Shaffer, his second wife referred to as “Ma.” The Shaffer Hotel and Rancho Bonito are listed on the National Register of Historical Places.

Visitors to the Shaffer Hotel will immediately notice the swastikas used as decorative elements on the facade of the building. Though Clem Shaffer was of German descent, the motif was actually implemented in the 1920s (before the rise of Nazism) as the Navajo "whirling log," a symbol of peace. [1]
