More Information:

On Friday’s session, October 25th, Rousseau will moderate a presentation by curator Jean-Hubert Martin, with the participation of Dr. Barbara Safarova (president of abcd, Paris, and associate professor at the Collège International de Philosophie). Martin’s talk will reflect on specific aspects and challenges of his curatorial approach, known for its inclusion of non-western productions and its association of heterogeneous artworks and objects. Among his past exhibitions are Magicians of the Earth (Centre Pompidou, 1989), Artempo (Museo Fortuny, Venice, 2007), Dubuffet & Art Brut (Museum Kunst Palast, Düsseldorf, 2005) and biennials in Sydney, Lyon, Moscow, Venice and Sao Paolo. His latest project, Theater of the World (Mona, Hobart, 2012) is on view at La maison rouge in Paris this fall.

The session on Saturday October 26th features the art critic and independent curator Sandra Adam-Couralet (Judith Scott: Objets Secrets, Collège des Bernadins, 2011) and Nanette Jacomijn Snoep, director of Historical collections at Musée du quai Branly (Exhibitions: Invention of the Savage, Musée du quai Branly, 2012). By referring to the creations and artistic practices in the exhibition Masters of Chaos (Musée du quai Branly, Paris, 2012. Curator: Jean de Loisy) on which they both collaborated, they will compare the roles of the shaman and artist as transgressors.

Rousseau’s program for the most recent New York OAF was critically acclaimed for its dynamic array of guest speakers which included Massimiliano Gioni, Ralph Rugoff and Daniel Baumann, who participated in “A Bridge Between Two Worlds,” which dealt with the exhibition of works by self-taught artists into contemporary art contexts. The two Paris programs will shed light on our understanding of specific aspects of this evolving notion while examining the representation of otherness.
