Wide Open Arts is pleased to announce that the 2014 Outsider Art Fair New York will be held from May 8-11, at Chelsea’s Center 548. This marks the second New York event under its leadership. The recent success of the OAF’s inaugural Paris edition ensures that a second venture will be held there in October 2014.

The new dates for New York reflect a major shift for the OAF, which has been held in late January since its inception in 1993. The decision to reposition it concurrently with the New York edition of Britain’s Frieze Art Fair is part of Wide Open Arts’ mission to increase international awareness of both legendary and newly discovered self-taught artists, whose work is rarely seen at the major fairs.

This announcement comes towards the end of a year marked by an unprecedented focus on Outsider Art at a slew of international exhibitions including the Hayward Gallery’s Alternative Guide to the Universe, the 2012 Sao Paulo Biennial, the 2013 Carnegie International, the Hamburger Bahnhof’s Secret Universe series, and the 55th Venice Biennale’s Encyclopedic Palace, where Massimiliano Gioni grounded his curatorial paradigm within the vision of Marino Auriti—a virtually unknown, working class self-taught artist.

In 2014, Wide Open Arts will present its Outsider Art Fairs in New York and Paris with the same vitality epitomized by these groundbreaking exhibitions. Through the dynamic vetting of artists and exhibitors, the lively exchanges presented at its OAF Talks programs (which have already featured Mr. Gioni and Jean-Hubert Martin among others), and original articles published on its forthcoming website, Wide Open Arts invites visitors to join its pursuit of art’s visionary potential to transform the way we see the world.
