Dan Beck's Home & GardenDan Beck (1949 - 2020)
About the Artist/Site
The front and rear yards of Dan Beck’s colorfully-painted craftsman-style bungalow in Wichita are filled with sculptures created by the artist and his wife Chris as well as with huge stones that the artist dug up or transported from nearby areas – always leaving an “offering” in exchange at the original site. Some of the stones have been carved with enigmatic, semi-figurative or abstract bas-relief images, while others remain in their natural state. Plantings, waterfalls, ponds, a wooden arbor, and a seven-sided gazebo, purposely designed thusly to counter the prevailing trend in gazebos, which are typically hexagons or octagons, also enhance the property.
A low stone fence encircles the house, and an outbuilding behind is also brightly painted – with, among other images, the words “Art is Cool,” which continues Beck’s aesthetic. Found objects, including plates, have been nailed to vertical sections, adding to the color and interest of the site.
