Emitte Hych(1909 - 2009)
About the Artist/Site
Emitte Hych spent the first thirty years of his life living in rural Mississippi. As a young man, he worked as a sharecropper picking cotton. In the 1940s, Hych moved up North to join a sister. He was able to get a job as a chef and took great pride in his cooking, saying "I ain't scared to get in the kitchen with no woman!" His drawings and paintings are whimsical scenes of people, snakes, elephants, and imaginary plants.
