About the Artist/Site
Even as a child Debertol decorated his home, covering both the interior and exterior with designs. At nine years old, for example, he created a fairy tale landscape on one of the interior walls, including Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs in relief.
Inspired by the Ladin culture of the local Dolomite mountains (a culture whose roots go back to the Roman Empire), he transformed a former mill inherited from his family into his private home, now dedicated to St. Florian, the patron saint of Canazei. He has explored a variety of subjects, techniques, and styles at this site: openwork lacey decorative wood cutouts grace the bottom of the gables and bannisters of the upper levels of the house; gypsum stuccos feature paintings of the local landscapes; painted floral decorations encircle illustrations of regional birds. There are also representations of old churches in the Val di Fassa, and carved and decorated furniture, monumentally-scaled ostrich eggs, and painted wooden objects. He has painted both the interior and exterior of the house with designs and decorations, and often uses alternative media that he mixes from eggs shells or small stone plates.
Two monumental busts – considered guardians by Debertol – are carved on tree trunks that straddle the walkway in front of the house to welcome the visitor; Debortol runs a typical regional products shop on the ground floor of his house. The home is located in the historical center of Canazei, and the exterior decoration is clearly visible from the street
