Kermit Bishop Garden
About the Artist/Site
Kermit Bishop was born in 1909 in Big Stone Gap, a town in Wise County, Virginia. According to correspondence with Seymour Rosen, Bishop began working on his garden in unincorporated Sacramento County after he retired in 1966 and felt he needed something to keep him busy. In his correspondence, he confirmed he was still adding to and fixing his garden in 1976. Seven photos of Bishop's Garden were featured in Seymour Rosen’s 1976 exhibit at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, In Celebration of Ourselves.

The fountain turned garden as well as all of the photos were in unincorporated Sacramento County, California. Uncle Kerm bought the acreage and built the house with the proceeds from the state buying his former residence in order to build highway 50 through Sacramento. The legs of the female sculpture on top were used to hold up his mailbox (a mini skirt was put on them).
