About the Artist/Site
When Ricky Boscarino came across his home in 1988, it was just a 600 sq ft cabin in the woods, but Ricky saw his future. Originally from a long line of artists, Ricky was always creating art and as a young student he was recognized for his meticulously crafted dioramas of cockroaches in beauty salons and nativity scenes. As he attended The Rhode Island School of Design, he began to integrate his love for entomology and irreverence with his many knacks for the arts, which he continues to create today.
Luna Parc is a personal home, working studio, living classroom, and community artist space. He began transforming his home in 1989 and today it stands 11 levels high, with 15 rooms totalling over 5000 sq ft.
As you approach the home, you are greeted by a ferro cement construction entryway that Ricky has dubbed the “Artichoke Portico.” Inside, each room is like another sliver of Ricky’s mind, from the kitchen festooned with milk tabs and nearly 20,000 wine corks along the walls, to the Hall of Hats, Nature Lab, weaving studio, grand mosaiced bathroom, and Asia Room which has a set of doors that are almost 200 years old.
Ricky is an avid collector, as well as creator, and he has traveled to over 40 countries and brought back a practice or item from each place that he has incorporated into his home. The Ballroom (which is covered in morse code messages, a real human skeleton, and many of his painted portraits) is where he hosts artists and students for lectures and readings on the different ways to be a working artist. As you continue up the home, you see Ricky’s bedroom on the seventh level, and at the top of the home is the Sky Walk which is decorated with whirlygigs and kinetic sculptures.
As you look out over the Sky Walk, you get an encompassing view of the yard. Ricky has created a cobalt blue bottle house and an intricate garden that lights up at night. There is a small purple chapel surrounded by a fence of crutches that Ricky made in honor of his grandfather. The Chapel of the Saints and the fence are to commemorate the miracle that Ricky’s grandfather witnessed when he was young – a young man regaining the ability to walk right in front of his eyes.
Beyond the garden and chapel sits Ricky’s Atelier. Here he works with interns, all young and local artists, teaching them his techniques and craft but also showing them that there is another way to live as an artist. In 2015, Ricky established the Luna Parc Atelier Foundation, Inc.. This program “teaches apprentices hand working and business skills necessary to succeed as self-supporting artists,” while also caring for the home and its future.
