Museo d’arte contemporanea rupestre [Museum of Contemporary Rock Art]Marius Branca (b. 1952)
About the Artist/Site
A native of Salento, Branca spent twenty years living in Switzerland, to which he had emigrated as a laborer and where he enjoyed his first artistic experiences. After returning home in 2000 he began to build his Museum of Contemporary Rock Art on hilly property he owns near the Specchia cemetery. Using the local stones and rocks to build up architectural structures, arches, and monuments, he has also created ceramic plaques and iron assemblages: together they animate the “Hill of Disturbing Idols.”
Branca also writes volumes of poetry, taking inspiration from classical culture, from which he took the name Marius. He is very active in the promotion of his work, which is accessible to viewing by the public.
