Mars Polar LanderPedro (Pete) Garcia

About the Artist/Site

A set of intriguing towers identified as the Mars Polar Lander are located on the main street running through El Rito, an unincoporated community located in northern New Mexico that is surrounded by the Carson National Forest.

Constructed over a steel pipe armature, found objects as well as native rocks serve both as structural devices and as ornamentation. Sections that appear to be landing legs and pads confirm the intention to reference the robotic spacecraft sent by NASA to Mars in 1999 (which apparently crashed on contact and was declared lost).

Situated in the middle of El Rito, the exteriors of the towers are accessible for public viewing, although climbing in or on them is prohibited.
