About the Artist/Site

Paul Bobrowitz has spent the last 30 years creating an incredible array of metal sculptures that fill every corner of his six-acre property in Colgate, Wisconsin. Titled “Spectacular Sculpture,” the sprawling yard installation is about 30 minutes northwest of Milwaukee and features pieces of all sizes – from tiny tea kettle birdhouses mounted on trees to massive, freestanding abstractions created from castoff industrial materials.

Bobrowitz was creative as a child and eventually went into carpentry as his profession. While primarily working with wood, he learned to weld in order to create small fixtures or modify his carpentry tools. He expanded his welding into larger, functional items like candelabras and plant stands before moving into more creative work. With the encouragement of his wife (who is also an artist) and a local gallerist, Bobrowitz began pursuing the creation of his metal sculptures full-time in 1995.

Resourcefulness is key to Bobrowitz’s practice as he frequently employs the use of cast off and salvaged materials in his artwork. For example, one of the most striking pieces on the site The Collective is a giant head made from propane tanks that have themselves been cut to resemble small faces. After several years of primarily working with farm machinery, a friend recommended he transition to industrial scrap. This transformed his practice as these materials – stainless steel, copper, glass, etc. – better enabled him to create more fluid, biomorphic pieces.

Always working on something, Bobrowitz is surrounded by caches of materials that are ready to be incorporated into an existing sculpture or used to create something completely new. He routinely shares photos of his in-progress work to his Facebook page. While some of Bobrowitz’s sculptures are considered permanent parts of the Spectacular Sculpture collection, much of it is for sale, and he also works on commission. The outdoor gallery is open to the public daily from 9am to 5pm, and tours with Bobrowitz can be arranged by appointment at bobrowitzsculpture@gmail.com or 262-538-1495.
