About the Artist/Site

This outdoor sculpture garden was begun in the late 1960s by Joseph Seiller, a farmer by vocation. He doesn’t even remember how, really, he began this project, but he had always liked animals, and he says that perhaps he was inspired by looking at the deer that decorated a large clock on his house.

Created from a concrete mortar mixture, many of the works were later carefully painted in natural colors. They include around twenty animals, many larger than life size, as well as around ten figures dressed in casual or work clothes. The works include a horse with rider, a bear, a donkey, a peacock, a kangaroo with baby in its pouch, rabbits standing on their hind legs and carrying backpacks of provisions, a small-scale Santa Claus, dogs, and deer, all created with great attention to realistic features. Additional works in high relief are installed on the exterior façade of the artist’s home.

The environment is extant and most of the works can be seen from the outside of the perimeter fence surrounding the artist’s property.
