Home on the Range Motel
About the Artist/Site
The Home on the Range Motel in Bowie, Arizona was an exemplification of the midcentury “Indian Shops” of the American southwest. The motel functioned as both a respite for travelers on highway 86 as well as an emporium; selling arts and crafts created by local native tribal members. Likely built in the 1940’s, the motel and store fell by the wayside after the implementation of interstate 10 rerouted drivers away from the small town of Bowie. The building ended its life in a state of disrepair, finally being demolished in 2021. The bright facades and dynamic signs made shops and motels like the Home on the Range a popular subject matter for tourist photography of the southwest.
